The Longhua colliery was flooded on Tuesday night when 20 miners were working underground, official news agency Xinhua reported. Six escaped and 14 were trapped, with rescuers managing to pull two miners out alive.

The news agency said initial investigations indicate that rainfall had flooded a neighbouring abandoned mine which then flooded the working mine.

The Longhua colliery is a township-owned coal mine and was in the process of upgrading its technology to lift production from 60,000 tons per annum to 300,000tpa.
