Power facilities will be upgraded via the construction of a 10km, 132,000V power line from Alligator Creek’s existing Powerlink substation to a new Ergon zone substation at Louisa Creek.
Powerlink and Ergon Energy will collaborate on the project to prevent line duplications.
The power upgrade is expected to support the expanding Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay coal ports, Queensland Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said.
Communities such as Rosella, Dalrymple Bay, Louisa Creek, Alligator Creek, Hay Point, Sarina, Koumala, Ilbilbie, Carmilla, Eton and Balberra will also benefit from the extra power.
“The coal industry is a driving force behind Queensland’s booming economy,” Wilson said.
“Unprecedented international demand, coupled with strong coal prices, points towards continued strength and success in the future for the Queensland coal export industry.”
Wilson added the project will provide for current and future coal export power demands as well as the surrounding port communities.
Ergon Energy is conducting a thorough briefing process, ensuring local communities are aware of the project’s impact.
“The benefits of this project will be appreciated by major energy customers at Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay and the broader local community for years to come,” Wilson said.
