The deal means Brandrill will operate the rotary blast hole rigs for three years in Queensland’s Bowen Basin and will have an option to buy the rigs on completion of hire.

The rigs are currently at work at a range of coal projects with clients including Orica, Leighton, Thiess and Golding Contractors. Brandrill will complete these contracts and any extensions.

The company will also employ the 22 staff currently involved in the operation of the BJC rigs.

The hire brings Brandrill’s total fleet to 60 rigs across Australia, with 13 in the Bowen Basin.

“We are examining further growth opportunities in this area and have already committed to acquire two new Reedrill SKSS rigs to service our existing contract at the Ensham coal project,” Brandrill chief Ken Perry said.

The Reedrill rigs will be delivered late in the financial year.
