According to local media, including the Knoxville News Sentinel, Darrell Seiber, an employee of Cox Trucking, was driving at a speed too fast for conditions when his 1982 Mack truck went into a slide on Red Oak Mountain Road in Anderson County.
The road is at National Coal’s Mine No. 5A property, according to federal data.
Seiber attempted to escape by jumping from the vehicle, but the truck ran off the road, struck a tree and landed on its side. The incident occurred at about 8.45am local time.
The US Mine Safety and Health Administration did not respond to an ILN request for details. It is still undetermined whether or not the fatality will count towards the year’s coal-related death toll.
MSHA spokesperson Amy Louviere did tell local media Friday that Seiber had suffered fatal head injuries from his jump. The agency will investigate the incident because it occurred on mine property.
The driver’s death is the first fatal accident on mine property since 2004, the news outlet said. Since 1996, two people have been killed in coal mining-related incidents.
