The 12-hole program includes eight open holes with a 150mm diameter and four cored holes with a 100mm diameter.

Each hole will be spaced 750-1000m apart to add to the historical drilling data with all the new holes being geophysically logged.

“We plan to expedite drilling with the objective of providing us with a better understanding of coal seam geometry,” Coalworks managing director Andrew Firek said.

“All our preparation work has confirmed our confidence in the 50 million tonnes to 70 million tonnes target for coking and thermal coal which we will pursue vigorously.”

The explorer was granted the exploration licence for the project area in October and plans to kick off a preliminary mining study this year.

Coalworks envisages an open pit and/or underground mine targeting initial production of 2Mt per annum and increasing to 4Mtpa.

Shares in the explorer closed down 1.45% yesterday at 34c.
