Coal production in October 2000 totalled 97 million short tons, 8% higher than in October 1999. Coal production during the first 10 months of 2000 totalled 910 million short tons, slightly lower than production during the first 10 months of 1999.

Electric power sector coal stocks were 113 million short tons at the end of August 2000, 14% lower than the level a year earlier. Coal exports in August 2000 totaled 6 million short tons, 10% higher than exports in August 1999.

Coal imports in August 2000 totalled 1 million short tons, 56% higher than imports in August 1999.
