The PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) this week ordered Eighty Four Mining Co. to pay Hothouse Floral Co. to repair mine subsidence damage to various structures on the company’s property in Washington County, and for land damages that have caused drainage problems.
The damages were caused by longwall operation Mine No. 84 that undermined Hothouse Floral’s property in 1997 and 1998.
The amount to be paid by Eighty Four Mining Co. also includes about US$27,000 in reimbursement for relocation costs incurred by the florist and US$270,590 for repairing and regrading land. The total order is US$1,175,851.
Eighty Four Mining Co. made several offers over the years to pay for the damages based on DEP estimates, but the pay Hothouse Floral Co rejected those offers.
