Consol Energy's Bailey operation in Greene County Pennsylvania produced 10.133 million clean tons, up 8% on 2003, while the company's nearby Enlow Fork mine produced 10.218 million tons, up 3%.

Next best production output came from Twentymile Coal Company's Foidel Creek mine (in Colorado) with 8.557 million tons and Consol's McElroy (West Virginia) with 8.357 million tons. New BHP Billiton mine San Juan in New Mexico was next in line with 7.685 million tons, followed by Canyon Fuel Company's Sufco operation (Utah) with 7.568 million tons.

The preliminary production data for US longwall mines for calendar year 2004 was sourced from the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) database and published with permission.
