Brown coal production increased by 1.4% in 2005, from 893 million tonnes to 905Mt.

Although production has declined in Germany over the last 12 months it remains the world's largest brown coal producer, representing over 20% of global production in 2005.

Other major producers including the United States, Russia, Greece and Australia have all increased production, according to the report.

“Coal resources are available in almost every country worldwide, with recoverable reserves in around 70 countries,” the institute said.

“At current production levels, proven coal reserves are estimated to last 155 years. In contrast, proven oil and gas reserves are equivalent to around 41 and 65 years at current production levels respectively.”
