BHP said this morning metallurgical coal achieved record shipments, with production increasing half year on year by 6% to 19.2 million tonnes.
Illawarra Coal achieved a half year production record, reflecting strong performance from West Cliff, Appin and Dendrobium mines.
Strong production at Peak Downs and South Walker Creek and the continued ramp up of Poitrel also contributed to the higher production.
Both Illawarra Coal and Queensland Coal achieved record shipments.
BHP said its energy coal production was in line with other periods, down 2% compared to the 2006 second half at 40.2Mt.
New Mexico Coal production improved following maintenance activities at US mines Navajo and poor geological conditions at the San Juan longwall experienced in the September 2007 quarter.
Hunter Valley Coal and Cerrejon Coal continued to set new production records.
BHP said its $US390 million investment in a third terminal at Newcastle Port, announced yesterday, would underpin its Australian east coast expansion plans in energy coal.
