The granting of the permit will give Altura the opportunity to apply for a forestry land use permit, which is required for coal mining.
The upgraded permit for the South Kalimantan-located project has been granted for 20 years, with the option for renewal.
Meanwhile, Altura said it had completed an inspection of third party infrastructure including haul roads, stockpiles and river loading near the Tabalong project.
The company said negotiations were underway with the third party to share the infrastructure.
Access to the infrastructure could considerably reduce development time and capital expenditure.
Tabalong has a 13.4 million tonne thermal coal resource and will produce around 500,000-750,000 tonnes per annum via an open pit operation.
The project is due for completion in 2012.
In early September, Altura received more than $A18.6 million through the exercise of listed options to help fund the development of the Tabalong mine.
