Economidis is set to play a leading role in the development of Vale’s new Queensland projects including Eagle Downs, Belvedere, Degulla and Red Hill.
He has more than 20 years experience in the Australian coal industry including most recently, five years with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance as vice president of the health, safety, environment and community portfolio and general manager of Caval Ridge and Goonyella-Riverside mines.
Economidis said he was looking forward to furthering his career at Vale, which he described as a progressive, dynamic company with big plans for the future.
“Vale is a truly global company with immense international expertise at its disposal and it’s an absolute honour to be entrusted with the important task of bringing our Australian growth strategy to life,” he said.
“For me, Vale represents a stand-out career opportunity.
“It’s the world’s second largest mining company. It has a global reputation built around success and innovation. It has a clear vision for the future and a strong commitment to Australia.
“There’s a real sense of momentum and energy within Vale Australia that’s being driven by our ambitious plans for growth and our expanding team and I look forward to building Vale’s presence in Australia.”
In August this year Vale announced that its director of Australian coal operations and BHP Billiton veteran Steve Badenhorst would be heading up its coal operations after Brazilian Decio Amaral left the role of global coal director of the company.
