Natural resources and mines minister Henry Palaszczuk released the draft Central Queensland Water Regional Water Supply Strategy (CQWRWSS) in Rockhampton yesterday, saying the strategy sought to achieve "optimum social, environmental and economic outcomes".
The water management strategy is said to cover the Fitzroy Basin and coastal catchment areas, which supply water to major regional centres including Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Emerald.
The Central Queensland region also includes the caol rich Bowen Basin.
The draft water strategy reflects the important role played by the mining and resources sector in the state's economy, making adequate provisions for existing and future operations in the area.
Palaszczuk said that industrial water provider SunWater's proposed pipeline from Burdekin Falls Dam to the Isaac-Connors catchment was expected to meet the water needs of identified mining proponents in the Northern Bowen Basin until 2020.
"Beyond 2020, or if unexpected demand arises earlier, the draft strategy identifies a dam site on the Connors River as the preferred option to supply future mining and urban demands," Palaszczuk said.
The minister said the draft, prepared in consultation with key stakeholders, identified areas where further dams could be constructed; however, the use of demand management and water trading initiatives is expected to maximise the potential of existing infrastructure to meet requirements.
