The 50-year-old man was struck by chest pains at about 3pm on Wednesday, September 18.
“It is believed the man suffered a heart attack while working underground,” A Glencore spokesman told ILN.
He said the man was working as a supervisor.
Operations ceased for the rest of the day, with counselling and other support offered to the man’s family and all staff at the mining complex.
An investigation is underway, with findings being prepared for the state’s Department of Natural Resources.
Tieri-based Senior Constable Duane Killick told Central Queensland News that the man’s colleagues took turns applying CPR in a bid to revive him.
"He was brought to the surface about 4pm, where CPR was continued before an intensive care paramedic from Emerald arrived and assisted the local paramedics, but there was nothing they could do," the officer told the publication.
