Murphy Pipe and Civil Group confirmed the fire broke out at the Duck Creek workers’ camp, just outside the town of Injune, about 1am on Friday with local fire crews bringing it under control “very quickly”.

“The exact cause of the fire is currently being investigated, but confirmed the fire started within the kitchen area of the camp,” Murphy said.

“While a fire is an unfortunate incident, the fact that in the middle of the night, and after a 12-hour shift of hard work, more than 240 people were able to be safely evacuated from their individual rooms and into a safe location without any injury showed the camp's emergency evacuation plans were fit for purpose and implemented in a professional manner.”

While the ABC incorrectly reported that the blaze occurred at a “mining camp”, Santos confirmed the Murphy-owned and manned camp was used for the Comet Ridge to Wallumbilla Pipeline Loop project.

The project involves duplicating 120km of existing pipe with larger 24-inch pipeline to make sure there is “sufficient capacity to connect gas compression facilities at Wallumbilla to the start of Santos GLNG’s 420km gas transmission pipeline in Fairview, north of Roma”

The CSG-related pipeline project is expected to be completed in early 2015.
