Underground mines produced 1.9Mt during the month, down on the 2.5Mt produced in January 2005.
Coal exports totalled 14.4Mt in January with coking coal making up 7.9Mt and thermal coal the rest. Of the 2.4Mt of coal used within Queensland, 2.2Mt was used for power generation.
Over a third of exports were shipped through Dalrymple Bay, followed by Gladstone, which exported 3.8Mt, Hay Point 2.1Mt and Abbot Point 1.2Mt.
Employment numbers continued to climb with 17,511 employed during the month compared with 14,183 the previous January.
Japan was the state's main coal export destination taking 4.8Mt of coal during January, followed by Korea and India taking 1.6Mt and 1.4Mt respectively.
Of September exports amounting to 11.8Mt, coking coal accounted for 71% of the total, with some 3.4Mt of exported coal destined for thermal use.
