Coal Air Queensland is an alliance between groups and individuals that includes Lock the Gate Alliance, Friends of the Earth, Rosewood District Protection Organisation, Oakey Coal Action Alliance and Parents Against Coal Dust.
The alliance said the groups had aligned as a result of community concern on the health impacts of coal dust.
“Like the communities in the Hunter Valley, we too deserve to know the facts about the particulate pollution coming from coal mining and trains,” Coal Air Queensland spokeswoman Hannah Aulby said.
“Coal companies and the Queensland government have for too long hidden the true story from residents.”
Aulby said community concerns about coal dust were “not being taken seriously” by government or industry so Coal Air Queensland would work to conduct its own research on the issue.
The alliance said Queensland University of Technology’s International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health director Professor Lidia Morawska had confirmed her willingness to assist with the research, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
