The PM told the BBC that the government would do whatever it could to assist the embattled firm UK Coal who announced two closures this week.

In the interview the PM said that the shale boom across the pond lead to the UK exporting huge quantities of coal with UK companies struggling to compete with the cheaper competition.

The shale boom caused a greater reliance of domestic natural gas in the US, prompting coal providers to export, predominantly to Europe.

Last year American coal exports to the UK increased by 11.8% according to figures by the US Energy Information Administration.

The PM’s comments have been criticised by members of the Department of Energy and Climate Change who say that further investments in fossil fuels are illogical and the wrong way to go about propping up the country’s economy.
