The plant’s first breakdown occurred in January while the plant was still in its testing phase.

The second is believed to have been caused by a leak in the boiler just days after the plant was handed over to the Ceylon Electricity Board by contractor China Mechanical Engineering Corporation last Thursday.

Power and Energy Ministry Secretary MMC Ferdinando told the media that the CEB was likely to face a huge financial crisis because the breakdown meant it had to purchase power from private suppliers at a high cost.

According to Ferdinando, the reduction of power generation through hydro sources due to the drought in Sri Lanka has also affected the CEB’s hip pocket.
