The textbook consolidates 50 years of knowledge and experience in mining and geotechnical engineering and presents it in a risk management framework as a basis for improving safety, innovation and economics in mining, especially in the underground coal sector.

Subsidised by ACARP, the Minerals Council of Australia and the author, the book has been written for both students and practitioners and has been some seven years in the making.

Emeritus Professor Galvin has a relatively unique international background in directing research and academic organisations, operating and managing mines, and overseeing risk management in industry.

Keynote topics and speakers at yesterday’s workshop were UNSW Engineering Dean Professor Mark Hoffman, Professor Galvin on “Health & Safety - Looking back to go forward”; Austmine Chairman Emeritus Alan Broome on “Innovators - Australian Mining Equipment, Technology and Services Sector” and Mine Site Technologies Chairman Phil McCarthy on “Innovations in digital technologies, Automatic Data Capture and Analysis for Enhanced Safety and Productivity.”

Master of Ceremonies for the event was NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer Mary O’Kane.
