This was also weak on a seasonal basis (-5.8% year-on-year).

Compounding this was a strong rise in exports of 82% year-on-year to 0.5Mt.

“China’s imports of commodities in April fell lower from the strong levels recorded the previous month, but still remained at elevated levels,” according to ANZ.

“While improving sentiment continues to give consumers confidence to restock, a general lack of build in inventories suggests underlying demand is also having an impact. This should see import demand remain strong in the coming months.”
