A report from Hunter Valley Operations confirmed one of its blasts caused an airblast wave measuring 125.78dB(L) at the Warkworth Village monitor on 25 February 2016.

The company is required to ensure blasts are below the approved airblast limit of 120 decibels, which reduces the impacts of noise and air pressure vibration.

The mine has advised the Department it is updating its procedures to reduce the risk of similar incidents happening in the future.

A Department spokesperson said visits across the Hunter and Central Coast are an important part of the compliance team’s inspection activity across the state.

“The Department’s compliance officers conducted nine site visits across the Hunter and Central Coast in April,” a spokesperson said.

“Our compliance officers review reports and conduct audits, spot checks without warning, as well as work with companies to ensure they are sticking to the rules.

“The Department can issue the highest on-the-spot fines in the country for breaches of conditions.

“Companies can also be prosecuted in court for breaching conditions, with the most severe breaches attracting fines of up to $5 million.

“Community members are encouraged to contact the compliance officers with concerns about major projects in their neighbourhood.”
