TEAM Group has been named Queensland Mining Contractor of the Year.

Noel Dyson

The Mackay-based company, founded in 1989, was named as a finalist in two categories of the Queensland Mining Contractor Awards for its innovation across multiple aspects of a stacker and reclaimer erection contract for Anglo American’s Grosvenor Mine.

Its girder transport saved Grosvenor an estimated $400,000 and its frame lift solution also cut costs in the form of a quicker delivery and reduced downtime.

Judging panel member Lucas Dow said the “demonstrated innovation and a focus on improving cost and schedule efficiency were hallmarks of both projects – the out-of-the-box thinking and real engineering design work and implementation delivered excellent results”

The Queensland Mining Contractor Awards, organised by the Bowen Basin Mining Club, recognised contractors from all areas of the mining industry.

The McConnell Dowell Mastermyne Joint Venture won the Time Saving category for finishing works it provided to the tunnel boring machine-driven drifts at Grosvenor.

C&C Civil & Mining won the Cost Saving category for its development of a flameproof mobile shotcrete rig capable of working in explosive risk zone areas underground to apply fibre reinforced shotcrete as support to underground mine roadway ribs.

SMW Group won the Innovation category for its work to reduce the barriers of robotic technology in a mining fabrication setting.

Murphy Civil & Pipe won the Staff or Community Engagement award for developing an app that lets management gauge the mental wellbeing of its 1000-plus fly-in, fly-out workers. The app also provides instant access to counselling.

Auxilium was judged to have the best product launch at the Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition with its light tower refurbishment program.
