The government will involve the industry in a review of infrastructure through a stakeholder engagement process after the mineral exploration and mining sector claimed that a “one-size fits-all” solution is not appropriate for a state as diverse as Queensland, AMEC regional manager for QLD and NT Bernie Hogan said.

“Getting the planning right in the two significant areas of the state – The Darling Downs, and particularly Central Queensland – is crucial for the viability of the mining industry,” he said.

“Considering the future requirements for all those involved, not just the largest producers, is vital to prepare Queensland for long-term growth opportunities.

“Regional planning gives all industries and stakeholders a chance to be heard and create a certain future for remote communities to achieve their potential as they see fit across a range of industries including tourism, mining, agriculture or property development.”

AMEC would be actively engaging with each of these regional planning committees and is encouraging all industry members to work proactively on their engagement with local communities, Hogan said.
