The Abbot Point Coal Terminal X50 Expansion Marine Works together with a new ship-loader will see the coal port capacity more than double in the next two years.

Earlier this year the coal port jumped from an output of 15Mtpa to 21Mtpa and is steaming ahead towards its 50Mtpa target.

Works for the expansion include the construction of a second 500m long berth about 2.9km offshore together with a jetty conveyor and transfer towers.

The new X50 SL2 ship-loader, which will also be fabricated and commissioned by John Holland, is expected to load 7200t of coal an hour.

Work on the contract is due to commence this month and is scheduled for completion in May 2010.
