According to local newspaper the Carmi Times, Tim Adamson, 45, was pinned between a continuous miner and the rib at about 2.30pm local time at the mine owned by Alliance Resource Partners. He had worked at the complex for approximately eight years.

Investigations by both the US Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals have begun.

A request for comment by ILN from MSHA was not returned by press time.

According to federal officials’ statistics, the last death at Pattiki occurred in 2000. It was the first coal death in the state since 2003.

Pattiki, a 300-worker operation that produced about 2.8 million tons in 2007, is operated by ARLP subsidiary White County Coal.

It had 14 non fatal days lost (NFDL) operator injuries throughout last year on over 764,000 total man-hours, according to MSHA statistics.
