The complex has reached this same milestone on two other occasions – in 2006 and 2000.

"This represents an important milestone in our efforts to eliminate all injuries and lead the industry in safety performance," Patriot chief operating officer Paul Vining said.

Patriot is the third-largest producer and marketer of coal in the eastern United States, with 15 mining complexes in Appalachia and the Illinois Basin.
