Ken-American Resources confirmed the lay-offs from its 378-worker Paradise mine in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, were temporary.
The decision was “a necessary step to ensure the future of the mine”, company spokesperson Chris Van Bever told local media, noting that the mine was due to undergo reconstruction and a shift in production from the Kentucky No. 11 to the Kentucky No. 9 seam.
“We regret the temporary reduction in employment, but it is unavoidable as we accomplish significant changes in the mine, which are all designed to ensure its long-term future,” Ken-American president Mark Nelson added.
The company, owned by Murray Energy, said that no more lay-offs were anticipated and the planned reconstruction should be completed in six months. At that time, some of the laid-off workers could be called back and the company hopes to eventually recall everyone.
The Paradise mine uses continuous miners and has an annual production rate of 3.3 million tons.
