The visit will involve meetings with decision-makers from government and local companies in each of the countries.

“They [Russia, Ukraine and Poland] have similar needs and strong interest in the expertise and technologies that Australia can provide, particularly in minesite development, methane extraction and processing, safety and environmental technologies,” Austrade said.

The trade commission said mining groups in the countries were looking at improved drilling technologies, especially directional drilling and navigation capabilities; efficient coalbed methane extraction, collection and utilisation; CO and CO2 detection and monitoring; underground climate-control systems; coal washing, ash management, processing and wastewater reclamation; personnel training, including efficient and safe mining practices; personnel management; and underground communication systems.

“There is a sound appreciation of Australia’s world-class technology and skills, and a readiness to learn from Australian experience,” Austrade said.

“There is recognition that to compete internationally, the Russian, Ukrainian and Polish coal industries need to invest in new technology to lift productivity as cost pressures intensify. There is a heightened emphasis on sustainability in work practices, safety and the environment.”

Austrade is encouraging Australian mining businesses in mine safety and environmental services, engineering and consulting services, project management, underground mining contracting services, maintenance and repair services for mining equipment, and coalbed methane technologies to join the mission.

The cost of the trip is $A12,200, including flights within Europe but excluding individuals’ flights out of and returning to Australia.
