The two accidents follow moves by Ukrainian officials to suspend work at seven mines after inspectors found copious safety violations. Ukraine coal mines are known for their high concentrations of methane gas and low safety levels.
In one incident this week a mine shaft roof collapsed in eastern Ukraine killing one miner 550 metres underground, AP said.
A second miner was killed Monday when a rock layer fell on him as he was working at a closed 100 meters below the surface, emergency officials told AP.
Both accidents are currently under investigation.
AP said more than 100 miners have died in Ukraine's mines this year and 3,700 have been killed since 1991.
