The aluminium, base metals and the stainless steel divisions will be combined under a non-ferrous materials group, headed by senior minerals executive Mike Salamon. In addition, Salamon will also look after health, safety and environment and project development services, and continue in his role as a group executive director.

Bob Kirkby will become group president of the carbon steel materials division, and retain his overall responsibility for the company's iron ore, metallurgical coal and manganese businesses. Phil Aiken will head the re-named energy group.

The diamonds and specialty products division, including minerals exploration and technology, will report to chief commercial officer Marius Kloppers. Marcus Randolph will stay in his current role as president of diamonds and specialty products, while assuming responsibilities in the business development area.

"These adjustments to our organisation maintain the very effective customer focused sector groups while allowing us to streamline reporting," said Chip Goodyear, chief executive officer of BHPB.

"They will allow us to more efficiently execute our strategy and identify and execute value-added opportunities."

The financial reporting structure remains unchanged.
