The OEM and Russian giant signed the contract at the end of March this year, which included a 12CM15WHBM continuous miner, a 10SC32 shuttle car, a BF-14 feeder breaker and other electrical equipment.

The deal was the first contract Joy has signed with SUEK, one of the three major coal groups in the Russian coal market.

SUEK, which is controlled by the Russian industrial and financial holding MDM Group, accounts for 30% of the country’s total steam coal output. The group currently operates 11 underground mines in Kuzbass with a total annual production capacity in excess of 15 million tonnes (16.5 million tons).

The JOY equipment will be used at the 7th of November mine in the Kuzbass region, which has an annual production of over 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons).

The mine operates in 4.5 metre (14.7 foot) coal seams with favorable conditions for productive longwall operations.

SUEK anticipates the new equipment will enable the mine to increase the size of the longwall panels and reduce the number of face transfers, which can normally involve up to a three month period of lost production.
