The second loader at the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance facility was put out of action on Thursday when the telescopic end of the second loader sheared off.
Earlier in the month the terminal’s capacity was impacted by a collision between the other loader and a ship, with the damage expected to be repaired by March.
Hay Point port manager Sam Bonanno expected one loader to be running by early Wednesday at the latest, ABC Online reported.
Nine ships are now anchored off Hay Point waiting to receive coal.
BMA is redirecting additional coal through the Dalrymple Bay terminal and the Gladstone facility and is continuing coal production at its Bowen Basin mines.
BMA plans to spend $157 million to lift Hay Point’s capacity from about 35 million tonnes to 40 million tonnes.
