Simtars Mining Research and Development Centre researcher André De Kock said the catalyst for developing the database was when a previous project identified the lack of IS information.
“Although Intrinsic Safety has been around since the early part of the previous century, it is still a technology that is understood and applied by a limited number of people worldwide,” ACARP said.
“It furthermore appears as if the knowledge base and the number of experts within the area is declining as people working in the field reach the end of their working life.”
Currently the database contains information on articles related to intrinsic safety. The database will be ready by the end of May 2007 when it will be available on CD from ACARP.
