The proposed Galilee Basin open cut thermal coal mine is targeting 32 million tonnes per annum of production with first exports in 2017, and won federal government approval last month.

According to the ABC, three families from the Alpha area are challenging the project over concerns about potential water impacts, while community group Coast and Country is separately trying to halt it over environment and climate change fears.

Proceedings in the Land Court will reportedly start this morning, with the case expected to last three weeks.
