Northern Indiana Public Service Company official Angie Nelson told local newspaper the Indiana Herald Argus that the blaze, which occurred at about 11.50am on the fourth floor of its Michigan City complex, involved only one of its coal feeders and resulted in minimal damage.
All workers and contractors were evacuated when the fire was discovered on the feeder into NIPSCO’s No 6 cyclone, which in turn ignited a rubber feed belt.
Nelson told the paper the flames were contained within about 15 minutes and none of the 50 or so individuals on shift at the time were hurt.
She also noted the generating station was in a temporary shutdown phase Friday, a periodic stoppage for inspections and reliability checks.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has begun.
