Henry Garcia, the sales vice-president of building contractor HL Ingenieros, told Bloomberg that Drummond’s required Colombian port enhancements could be ready this month.
“We are working at an intense rate in double shifts, seven days a week,” he reportedly told Bloomberg.
“It’s very probable that operations could start sooner than expected, which was March.”
Drummond declared force majeure on January 9, after the government closed down the Cienaga port until the company’s conveyor-based direct ship loading system was complete.
Most of Drummond’s Colombian coal customers are in the European market. The Cerrejon joint venture equally shared by the goliaths of Glencore Xstrata, BHP Billiton and AngloAmerican is Colombia’s leading coal producer.
