At the inaugural International Mining and Resources Conference – in Melbourne from September 22 to 26 – the latest safety equipment, protocols and procedures will be showcased, highlighting the future of accident prevention and safe mining.
The safety session, to be held on Thursday, September 25, is shaping up as one of the conference’s most anticipated events, with professionals from a variety of industries eager to discover the latest methods of protecting employees and de-risking projects.
Jamie Ross, head of safety at Newcrest and member of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group’s governing council, will be the headline act of the session, delivering a presentation titled “tackling the global mining safety challenges”
Attendees will be also be able to join a lively discussion with Matt Gill, former chief operating officer for LionGold and general manager of the Beaconsfield Gold Mine at the time of the 2006 mine collapse.
Gill will provide intimate details of his crisis management plan and the role in which safety precautions helped protect the lives of trapped miners.
Mine safety discussion will be complemented by speeches from key members of other industries, providing examples of easily transferable safety precautions and skills.
This includes a discussion from Lindsay Kranz, the director general of work, health and safety for one of Australia’s most dangerous lines of work – the Department of Defence.
The safety session will have broad application for a number of businesses, with a strong focus on accident avoidance procedures that are employed in many other industries.
Conference director Siobhan Corry said mining had the potential to be the most dangerous industry in the world, with miners required to work in extreme conditions kilometres below surface.
“IMARC is putting safety first with a strong program of speakers ready to discuss their latest preventative measures protecting workers and enhancing safety reputations,” Corry said.
