‘Inconsistent’ quality tests see China reject Australian coal

China has been rejecting Australian coal cargos that don't pass new import quality restrictions, and the local industry is concerned that the testing is being misused to favour China's struggling coal industry, according to the Australian Financial Review.

Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche said some Australian shipments had been redirected following testing he said was inconsistent and did not appear to comply with global standards. China is the world's largest coal market.

Queensland Labor backs Adani's Carmichael coal project

Queensland’s Labor government says it will continue to support Indian mining company Adani, despite revelations that the government's own Treasury officials believe the project is unbankable, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Senior officials in the former Newman government gave advice that Australia’s largest coal project “is unlikely to stack up on a conventional project finance assessment” while the LNP was preparing to pledge hundreds of millions of dollars to help the company build its infrastructure.

NSW government extends CSG buyback plan

The Baird government has extended its plan to buy back exploration licences for coal seam gas, prompting calls for AGL to ditch its permit for the Sydney region, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

As part of the NSW gas plan, the government has so far purchased and cancelled 12 petroleum exploration licences (PEL), covering almost 3 million hectares of the state.
