The 50-page Coal Facts 2010 provides a county-by-county rundown of production and reserve figures, permits and the amount of paid severance taxes over the prior year.
The top producing county in West Virginia in 2009 once again was Boone, with just over 27.3 million tons of output – down from 30.9 million tons the prior year and 33.6Mt in 2007. Boone was also top employer with 3785 workers, down from 4656 workers in 2008.
Based exclusively on underground production, Marion County has taken the top spot from the 2008’s first-place holder, Boone County, with more than 11.5Mt. Marion County held the top spot in 2007.
Boone County’s 2009 underground tonnage totaled 11Mt, putting it in second place for the year.
Consol Energy was again the state’s top producing corporate group with 29.7Mt, down from 32.7Mt in 2008, and its Consolidation Coal arm was the leading coal producing company with 15.6Mt.
Total direct employment was 20,453, with Boone County tops in staffing numbers,with 3785.
