Aviva, in conjunction with Earthtec, is progressing an environmental impact statement for its Mmamantswe coal project in Botswana.

The project is on the South African border, 70km north of the capital, Gaborone.

Dual stage washing studies on the project have confirmed the potential to produce 200 million tonnes of export thermal coal and 150Mt of domestic power coal.

Aviva said Friday it would consider applying for some additional coal licences following the lifting of the coal moratorium.

Last month Botswana President Ian Khama reportedly announced he would lift the ban on handing out new coal and coal-bed methane licences immediately.

The ban had been in place since June 2011 as the country focused on creating a blueprint for the best way to handle its largely untapped coal resources.
