Production at New Oakleigh has been declining over recent years with 2012 production at only 350,000 tonnes.
“The mine has now reached the end of its productive life,” the company said in a statement.
“New Hope is working closely with about 30 employees to find other positions within the company where possible.”
New Hope plans to double coal production at its New Acland mine to 10Mt despite grass roots opposition to the expansion that included radio commentator Alan Jones.
The New Acland mine produced 1.26Mt in the quarter to January 31, 2012 while its West Moreton operations produced 0.3Mt.
Sales for the quarter matched production at 1.56Mt, 29% higher than the corresponding period last year.
Despite these strong sales, the company said they had been somewhat offset by increased cost of production and transportation and a high Australian dollar exchange rate.
