The accident occurred at a Jiangxi province state-owned mine in East China on September 21 when a coal carrier was transporting 11 miners through the main entrance the mine and a steel cable holding the carrier disjoined.

The coal manager, who has now been suspended, originally said 10 workers were in the carrier with nine killed and one badly injured. It was then revealed there were 11 in the carrier and 10 had died and the mine had delayed reporting the latest information to authorities.

The workers who were responsible for the coal carrier had been detained, except the head labour contractor who had fled, Xinhua said.

Under Chinese safety rules miners must use special carriers to get down the mine shaft and not carriers designed for carting coal.
