Humphris' other board roles include positions as chairman of specialist underground contractor Eroc and mining equipment supplier Ampcontrol.

Leighton said Humphris brought extensive experience in the Australian and international coal industry to its board. Some of his previous positions include managing director of Peabody Resources, chairman of the Australian Coal Association and Newcastle Shippers, and director of the Australian Coal Research and Port Waratah Coal Services.

Humphris' appointment follows the recent resignation of Ian Johnson from the Leighton board. Johnson will remain a director of John Holland, a 70%-owned subsidiary of Leighton.
