The company confirmed it had received a “highly preliminary and tentative approach” on a possible offer.
It said the offer would be subject to a number of conditions and pre-conditions.
UK Coal said it had asked the unnamed prospective bidder for clarification of the approach but as yet none had been received.
UK Coal – which mines about 60% of Britain’s coal - reported a GBP28.7 million loss in 2004, blaming geological problems, industrial action and poor operational performance.
