The mining industry has already voiced concerns over changes that have seemingly reduced employee access to unions, which raises questions as to whether employees will have access to occupational health and safety training provided by unions.

Following widespread debate and misunderstandings over the new laws, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations is conducting information seminars across Australia to introduce local employers and employees to the WorkChoices system.

The seminars will run for two-and-a-half hours and cover the key elements of the new national system.

The Government said under WorkChoices all employees would retain the right to belong to, or not belong to, a trade union.

“An employer cannot dismiss an employee because they belong, or do not belong, to a union,” a government spokesperson said.

More than 350 seminars will be held in metropolitan and regional locations throughout Australia. Those interested in attending must book at www.workchoices.gov.au/events or call 1300 762 975 to receive venue and scheduling details.
