Richmond joined the company in 1978 and held the position of chief executive officer for Jim Walter Resources since February of this year, and was president and chief operating officer for nearly eight years prior to that. He is a graduate of the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.
A former Alabama Coal Association chairman, Richmond currently serves on the boards of the National Mining Association, the National Coal Council and Business Council of Alabama.
Also elected to the board this week was company vice-chair Vic Patrick, who joined Walter Industries in 2002 and has served as vice-chair since August of this year. Both appointments are effective immediately.
Jim Walter Resources controls three underground operations in Alabama, the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7, all of which extract from the Black Warrior Coal Basin producing an annual total of approximately 7 million tons.
