NSW Minerals Council chief executive Dr Nikki Williams said the opening of the plant, which was developed in conjunction with Worth Recycling, was a fine example of the industry’s commitment to effective management of natural resources.

“Through the research, demonstration and deployment of technologies and strategies to improve water management and re-use, the industry is showing leadership which will benefit the entire community,” Williams said.

“Sustainable access to water is critical for the mining industry, not only in the Illawarra but across the state.”

Mining is a very small user of water in NSW, though individual operations in some areas may be high local consumers.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Water Account 2004-05, mining accounted for 63 gigalitres or 1.06% of total water consumption in NSW.

This compares to households (573GL or 9.68%), the agriculture industry (4133GL or 69.79%) and the manufacturing industry (126GL or 2.13%).
