Her resignation is effective July 18 and no replacement was named in the announcement by Governor Edward Rendell.

McGinty played a significant role in the long-time project of revamping the state’s mine safety regulations (passed earlier this month under SB 949). It was the first significant update to the 120-year-old laws in nearly 40 years.

Also under her service, the state reclaimed hundreds of abandoned mines and instituted “nutrient trading” to enhance waterway quality.

The agency’s permitting review procedures were also amended to encourage the older property redevelopment and ensure economic development and environmental protection projects could commence more quickly and cost-efficiently.

McGinty was well known for her work to develop alternative and renewable energy sources and her energy portfolio standards led to private investment in projects equalling $US1 billion and which created more than 3500 jobs.

“Katie's tenure as DEP secretary has been marked by many achievements that will have a lasting benefit for this commonwealth," said Rendell.

“Her tenacity and passion have resulted in a stronger Pennsylvania on issues that are critical to protecting our land, air, water and climate.

“She has been a driving force in my administration, greatly improving the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians by fostering a cleaner environment and a stronger economy.”
