BHP said mining would not restart until an investigation into the Tuesday accident by the miner and government authorities had been finalised.
A second worker has also been critically injured.
The company did not say how much output would be lost.
Last year BHP said it would spend $US450 million on the Klipspruit project, which would see the mine's capacity growing from the existing 4 million tonnes per annum to 8Mtpa.
